Google has announced that they are extending free calling in Gmail through 2011. I would ask why they are doing this but it seems obvious to me - they haven't gained the market share they're looking for, so by extending the free calling they're looking to garner new customers. Whether that's pulling from competing services such as Skype or Vonage, or introducing new users to the VOIP market.
Of course if you enjoy using Google's services, it's just another reason to love Google.
